Vanuatu is a Pacific island country which is located in the South Pacific Ocean. Officially the Republic of Vanuatu, Vanuatu is 1,090 miles east of northern Australia, with Fiji to its west.

France and the United Kingdom claimed parts of the island in the 1880s before an independence movement in the 1970s. In 1980, the Republic of Vanuatu was founded. Since its independence, Vanuatu has become a United Nations and Commonwealth of Nations member.

Helicopter tours provide some of the best views of the island paradise. Private beach houses offer another way to enjoy the pristine tropical island.
